The Sharpedge Creative process - Case StudiesYou decide how we will work together. The Sharpedge process is entirely flexible. The case studies below demonstrate our custom-built service.

Case Study #1 - Jane, Author
Case Study #2 - Matt, Small Business Owner
- Jane emails to enquire about editing for the manuscript of her 75,000 word new historical fiction novel set in the Australian outback.
- Sharpedge offers to conduct a preliminary review (this is always provided to clients free of charge) and requests a sample of her work (first 5 pages) and a synopsis of the novel.
- Authors sometimes present their work for editing prematurely. This will render the editing process less efficient and more costly. Sharpedge reviews the work and determines whether or not it is ready for editing. From this review, it’s clear that Jane’s manuscript is sufficiently advanced for the editing process to commence. Jane elects to go for a combined developmental and copyediting process.
- Sharpedge recommends a process and timetable – in this case, given Jane is in a full time job, it’s agreed to edit in blocks of 15 pages, with a one week turnaround schedule. This will give her the time to absorb the editorial suggestions and make the revisions that she decides to accept.
- The fees are negotiated and agreed. The cost of Sharpedge’s service is obviously variable, entirely dependent on the manuscript, the client’s particular needs and their desired schedule. As an indication, the fee agreed for Jane is A$60 per 15 page instalment.
- Jane pays the first instalment fee and Sharpedge commences editing. Written feedback is sent to Jane each week as the edit progresses. She reviews and revises at her own pace.
- The editing process is fully interactive. Sharpedge is available throughout the process to discuss the work and ideas, to clarify editing suggestions and to answer any questions that arise.
- Once the instalment editing process has worked through the entire manuscript, Sharpedge offers a last full read-through with final recommendations.
- Armed with her shiny, edited manuscript, Jane is ready to start seeking an agent or publisher, or to self-publish.
Case Study #2 - Matt, Small Business Owner
- Matt is a newly-qualified nutritionist and is in the process of establishing his business. A vital part of his business plan is a high-impact internet presence – on a tight budget.
- To this end, he has developed a draft website and the associated content. He has also developed draft content for pages on Facebook and LinkedIn.
- Matt contacts Sharpedge, seeking an independent editorial review before he launches his business on the internet.
- As for all engagements, Sharpedge offers a free preliminary review to confirm that it is able to assist. If not, feedback will be provided free of charge to enable the client to further prepare their content.
- In this case, Sharpedge confirms that Matt’s draft work is ready for editing.
- A fee and timetable are agreed. This will vary widely from client to client but after considering the scope of Matt’s content, a fixed fee of $450 is agreed, with a turnaround time of one week.
- Matt provides his content in MS Word format, along with access to his draft website and the editing process begins.
- Two weeks later, Matt is sent Sharpedge’s full edit report with revisions as well as comprehensive suggestions and recommendations for improvements.
- Matt reviews and process the recommendations he chooses and launches his internet presence.
- Matt plans to include a regular blog in his website. He engages Sharpedge to edit the fortnightly 300 word posts at an agreed rate of A$50 per post.
